The territorial government is urging Yellowknife residents to evacuate by order of fire risk.
Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Shane Thompson, says that means residents living along the Ingraham Trail, Dettah, Kam Lake, Grace Lake, and Engle Business District should have a plan in place to evacuate by Wednesday night.
The remainder of residents are being advised to have a plan in place to get out of the region, by car, or air travel, no later than 12 p.m. Friday.
The City of Yellowknife and the GNWT called the evacuation as a precaution as the fire has not reached the City; however, the highway is safe and open for residents to evacuate at this time.
Flights are prioritized for individuals facing health concerns, and flights are available to fully evacuate everyone if needed.
According to officials, the Highway is subject to closures and with a lack of rain, the highway may close as early as the morning of August 17th.
