Following the mass evacuations of Northwest Territories communities, the United Way NWT has announced with more funding, they will begin distributing money to charities in Alberta where evacuees have been displaced.
“Last night the United Way NWT met and amended our practices and policies so that we can now contribute money to organizations assisting Northwest Territories evacuees in Alberta,” United Way NWT Chair David Conelly says.
“We can now provide funds out of the territory to organizations that are reaching out to help our evacuees,” he adds.
Several not-for-profits are eligible for funding to help NWT evacuees, and Conelly says United Way NWT is working with southern charities and non-profits to ensure immediate needs such as food, shelter, and pet care are taken care of for evacuees.
Residents of the NWT looking to help are encouraged to visit the United Way NWT’s website, and Conelly says money is the number one priority.
“We have raised for the first wave of wildfires almost $600,000, but those funds are gone and we’re only part way through the season, and with the second wave of wildfires and five or six communities now under evacuation and significant damage, we are really in need of money,” Conelly tells MyTrueNorthNow.
