Despite reports from the Town of Fort Smith, NWT Fire has issued a statement regarding the blaze.
According to NWT Fire, the flames are predicted to reach Fort Smith overnight despite what Councillor Dianna Korol issued in a statement earlier this evening.
“Fire is predicted to reach Fort Smith by tonight,” NWT Fire says. “Crews have worked and are still working to establish structure protection on critical infrastructure,” they add.
NWT Fire says agencies will keep critical resources that will protect the community outside of Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan.
“These personnel, aircraft, and equipment will be used to support ignition operations, structural protection, and containment,” NWT Fire says.
