Four registration centres open for Hay River evacuees, crews look to widen fire guard line

As evacuees from around the territory flock to the south seeking refuge, the Town of Hay River has issued an evening update for evacuees dispersed across Alberta. 

According to the Town severe smoke has hampered efforts by the spotter plane to make a proper assessment of the flames today. 

“It is hoped that Environment and Climate Change will issue a status update this evening which the Town of Hay River will share,” the Town says. 

Roads out of Hay River to the Alberta border, and west of Yellowknife remain closed, all evacuation has moved to air transportation. 

“Pet owners need to go to the airport for details on evacuating as they are dependent on the flight crew and aircraft,” the Town says.

“No further aircraft are scheduled for tonight but will be departing in the morning if conditions allow.”

“Due to availability, flights may be scheduled with short notice so it is best to be at the airport,” they add. 

Registration Centres have opened in High Level, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Peace river at the following locations- High Level Sports Complex – 10101 105 Avenue, Grande Prairie Alliance Church – 15502 102 St, Clearwater Inn and Suites- 4 Haineault St, Fort McMurray, and Baytex Energy Centre – 9810- 73 Abe Peace River, AB. 

Hay River Fire is working with the ECC to install fire protection systems and the Town of Hay River reports 10 CATS operational to widen the fire guard line.
