An evacuation order has been announced for residents of Fort Smith following a recommendation by Parks Canada due to forecasted wildfire behaviour.
Anyone in the town or the area is ordered to leave the area within the next eight hours. Anyone without a vehicle is asked to make their way to the Fort Smith Recreation Centre for transportation.
The GNWT says they will attempt to maintain Highway 5 access for as long as possible through the night.
Evacuees without accommodations are asked to proceed to the Hay River Community Recreation Centre.
