NWT Resident receives Commendation for Accessibility Efforts

Julie Green, the Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities, has just announced the recipient of the 2023 Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities’ Award for Accessibility and Inclusion.

It has been announced that Linda Mabbitt has received the award. For over 30 years, Linda has dedicated herself to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities in Fort Smith. As President of the Fort Smith Society for Disabled Persons, Linda played a key role in organizing recreational activities, social events, and learning opportunities. Linda’s direct involvement with persons with disabilities reflects her deep commitment to fostering inclusion and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone.

In a statement of congratulations, Minister Green said of Linda that she “has walked the talk on disability and inclusion in many different ways including service delivery, advocacy, and advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. She has significantly contributed to creating a more accessible and inclusive in Fort Smith and beyond. Her selfless efforts and remarkable achievements set an inspiring example for all of us.”

The Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities Award for Accessibility and Inclusion is presented annually to recognize contributions to enhancing accessibility and fostering inclusivity in the NWT.
