Residents of Wekweètì are required to evacuate immediately due to a wildfire in the area. Flights are being coordinated to bring all residents to Yellowknife.
NWT Fire is reporting three fires clustered around the community. The key fire of concern is located within 2km of homes in the town, and is currently located between the town and the airport. At the time of the initial report, is was measured at 50 hectares in size.
Five airtankers are working on the fire to try and limit the spread, with more helicopters on the way to provide assistance. Structure protection equipment, 2 fire crews, and additional equipment are expected to be on scene today.
Another fire is located across Snare Lake nearby Wekweeti, near the western edge of the lake. These fires will be monitored as there are significant wetlands in between the community.
