Behchoko man arrested for near child abduction

Behchoko RCMP have arrested one man following an attempted child abduction in the community.

On Friday morning, police say two children were walking on a wooded path near Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School when an unknown man grabbed one of the children and tried to drag them into the woods.

The child was able to break free from the suspect and run to safety with the other child.

Following an investigation, police arrested one man on Friday night. His identity hasn’t been released but RCMP say charges are pending.

“This incident brings forward the opportunity to remind parents and guardians to speak to children and youth about personal safety,” said RCMP in a statement.

Police say parents should discuss a safety plan with their children in the event of a similar incident.
