Woman forced from Northern Property rental unit after burst pipe

Yellowknife, NWT – A Yellowknife woman is staying at a motel she says she`s had to pay for after pipes broke in her Northern Property rental unit.

Margaret Beauchamp explains what happened Monday night at her apartment in the Matonabee North building on Franklin Avenue.

“The water was coming out of the wall. The pipes had already broken so we walked into a mess. I called maintenance to come and fix it and waited quite a long time. They came and while they were repairing that the pipes in the bathroom behind the toilet ruptured as well.”

Beauchamp says Northern Property offered her another unit in a different building.

She says it was more expensive, was not acceptable and she’d have to pay to move.

We asked her what she thinks of her landlord.

“It’s terrible the way they’re treating people like what happened last week with the report on people with income support. They have a monopoly and they just don’t care about people in Yellowknife as long as they’re collecting their rent.”

A video of Beauchamp’s apartment is posted on-line.
