Suncor employee killed by black bear in Alberta

Yellowknife, NWT – A female worker at a Suncor oil sands operation in Northern Alberta has been killed by a black bear.

The attack occurred Wednesday afternoon in a remote part of the main plant, about 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

The woman was attacked by a mature male black bear and pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not been released.

RCMP and Alberta government officials were called to the scene.

They reportedly found a very aggressive bear and shot it dead.

Suncor says the company does offer wildlife training to its employees, including how to alert others of any bear sightings.

They call it a tragic event.

An investigation is underway.
