Extreme cold warning in effect for North Slave Region

A period of very cold wind chills is expected to hit Wekweeti, Whati, and Behchoko today and tonight as the wind chill in these areas will get down to -50 and will continue until Thursday morning when warmer temperatures move into the region.

Environment Canada warns those living in these areas that the extreme cold puts everyone at risk and to cover up as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with extreme wind chills.

“Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.”

They also gave out a warning to not only make sure that you and your family stay inside but that your pets do as well.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”
