The City of Yellowknife has shared details on a fire in N’dilo.

Tuesday afternoon, a listener reported their snowmobile having caught fire. Norman Betsina and his wife said they were told that fire officials would not attend the scene. Betsina said he was told that if could he not put the fire out himself, to then call again.

The City has released a statement regarding the Fire Division’s decision. In the release, the City says that emergency responder numbers were limited due to two in-progress medical calls. At the time of the N’dilo fire call, only one of five emergency personnel were available.

The City says that due to the low number of staff, and the details provided of the fire (“no reported danger of entrapment or injuries and the snowmobile was on the lake with no indicated exposure to other property“), the decision to not attend was made. The City says the Fire Division had ruled that due to unfortunate timing, the outcome would remain the same whether the YKFD attended the scene or not.

Yesterday, Betsina and his wife, Phoebe Ann, reported no injuries to their two children.
