Eight new semi-independent units have been added to the Centre for Northern Families.
The announcement was made yesterday by Caroline Cochrane, Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation and Homelessness.
The Centre is currently located on Franklin Avenue in downtown Yellowknife. The eight single room suites have been added as semi-independent spaces for people who are currently without a home.
Yellowknife Women’s Society applied for funding through the NWTHC and received funding to enhance the Centre for Northern Families shelter to include eight semi-independent units.
The Government of the Northwest Territories said in a release that the new units are expected to “alleviate some of the overcapacity issues currently experienced by overnight emergency shelters.”
Minister Cochrane added by saying the GNWT is committed to addressing homelessness in Yellowknife and in the many communities across the Territory.
“Completing these eight new units will help homeless individuals who are looking for opportunities to move into a stable housing environment.”
The GNWT says the NWTHC will be working with the YWS to monitor the project over a three-year period to evaluate the overall outcomes from the investment.
