Vigil for Montreal Massacre; remembering NWT women lost to violence

December 6th has become a day of remembrance for people across Canada.

Trending on every social media platform, Canadians everywhere shared their thoughts on the Montreal Massacre, 28 years later.

“… 14 women representing the women who were killed in Montreal. Each will place a rose in remembrance of them and state the victim’s name and how old they would have been had they survived.”

The Status of Women Council of the NWT is holding a vigil for the murdered women in 1989. A part of the vigil will also be dedicated to women of the Northwest Territories who have suffered at the hands of violence.

Samantha Thomas, Executive Director for the Council, described what will be an emotional ceremony.

We’ll have a blessing,” says Thomas. “Then Minister Caroline Cochrane will be doing some opening remarks. The ceremony will then begin, with 14 women representing the women who were killed in Montreal. Each will place a rose in remembrance of them and state the victim’s name and how old they would have been had they survived.”

The vigil begins tonight at 7:00 at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife. All are welcome.
