First Air suspending service between YK and Norman Wells

As of May 17, First Air will be suspending service between Yellowknife and Normal Wells and starting daily non-stop service between the territory’s capital and Inuvik.

The announcement was made Friday.

A growing demand for service in Inuvik and a lack of one in Norman Wells is the reason for the suspension according to First Air.

“We will continue to monitor and review the [Norman Wells] market and the demand for this route in the future,” read a press release.

First Air says that any customers with bookings for flights to Normal Wells for flights after May 17 will be contacted by customer service or their booking agency and ‘advised of alternative options’.

Flights between Yellowknife, Inuvik and Norman Wells are operated as part of a codeshare agreement between First Air and Canadian North. In November, the airline announced it would be terminating that agreement with Canadian North.

The codeshare agreement is set to end May 16, one day before the changes to First Air’s routes take effect.
