“My son is gone home”: Remains confirmed as those of Mark Lynn

The remains that were found last weekend near Dettah have been identified as those of 21-year-old Mark Lynn.

The NWT’s Chief Coroner, Cathy Menard, confirmed the news to the family on Thursday, after an RCMP search turned up bone fragments, including a skull, along with other evidence.

Lynn was last seen on the evening of August 24 at a gathering near the lagoon area of Dettah. He was reported missing four days later.

“Faith is everything for me,” said Lynn’s father, Jim Lynn, a member of the Catholic church for over 50 years. “My son is gone home and I can be quite at peace with it.”

Lynn family invites you to a feeding of the fire at the Lynn home this Friday at 7:00 pm, #307 in Dettah. The event will be followed by a prayer vigil. A feeding of the fire is regarded as a very spiritual Aboriginal ceremony.

“I’m not Aboriginal myself, but certainly my son was,” said Lynn. “It’s a very spiritual ceremony, very moving, very helpful to work out the grief and move on in our lives.”

A service has also been announced for Mark Lynn for this Saturday, at 1:00 pm at St. Patrick’s church followed by a community feast at the Chief Drygeese community hall in Dettah.

Lynn says the community has been very supportive, with up to 400 people attending a spiritual ceremony earlier this week in Dettah.

LYNN SAYS SON WAS PARTYING

While there have been many theories about Lynn’s disappearance, his father says he knows for certain that Lynn was partying in the Lagoon area of the community.

He last heard from Lynn by text around 5:50 pm on the day he went missing, which said, “dad, if you don’t hear from me in the next 10 to 15 minutes, you may never again.”

“The kids were partying at the Lagoon,” said Lynn. “He somehow or another stayed behind, whether he got left behind or stayed behind, I’ll never know. That was God’s answer to his prayer.”
