St Pat’s completes Yellowknife hockey sweep over Sir John

Yellowknife’s St Patrick High School completed its first Challenge Cup hockey clean sweep since 2011 on Wednesday.

The Irish beat Sir John Franklin High School’s Falcons 6-0 in the girls’ game and scraped a 2-1 victory in the boys’ contest.

The Challenge Cup has been held annually between the two schools’ hockey teams since 1996. Prior to that, an annual mixed contest had been staged each year since 1986.

The clean sweep marks the first time in four years that St Pat’s teams have won both games. Sir John completed the same feat in 2012. The Falcons won 2014’s girls’ game, with St Pat’s the boys’ champions that year.

Yellowknife hip-hop artist Godson, doubling as Moose FM’s hockey insider, was part of a full house for both games at the Multiplex.

“They were both great games,” Godson told us.

“In the girls’ game speed was a factor. It looked like they had control from the get-go.

“As for the boys, the first period was pretty tense on both sides. Each side was very hesitant on pulling the trigger but everything opened up in the second period.

“Sir John cut it down to 2-1 with a penalty shot. It was almost like a movie – the last five minutes could have gone either way. The intensity picked up but St Pat’s held on for the win.”
