Yellowknife, NWT – Premiers and Aboriginal leaders from across Canada are pressing the federal government to have ministers meet with them to discuss the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in the country.
They are also asking the Harper government to conduct a public inquiry even though the Feds have continually dismissed the idea.
The issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women was at the top of the agenda during the 55th annual Premiers’ Conference in Charlottetown this week.
We reached Premier Bob McLeod from the conference and asked him where he stands on the issue.
“Our position, which is consistent with other Premiers and Aboriginal leaders, is that we support an inquiry as well as a roundtable of federal ministers that have responsibilities for Aboriginal people.”
McLeod says he will be returning to the North with a new title as well, after assuming chair of the Premier’s Working Group on Aboriginal Affairs Wednesday.
McLeod is hopeful that justice ministers can meet in the Northwest Territories as early as November to discuss the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women further.
