R.C.M.P stress road safety as children return to school

Yellowknife, NWT – With some kids heading back to the classroom this week, the R.C.M.P are asking drivers to be extremely careful in and around school zones.

Classes have already begun for students in Yellowknife’s Catholic School Board.

Yk1 students will go back to school next Tuesday.

Sergeant Barry Ledoux with the Yellowknife detachment says it’s an exciting time of year for parents and students alike, but drivers should prepare themselves for increased road activity.

“We’re asking that people keep their eyes ready for an unexpected child darting in between vehicles. We ask that the motoring public yield to all pedestrians at crosswalks and wait until they reach the opposite side of the sidewalk before continuing.”

Ledoux says drivers should also exercise extreme caution near school buses.

He also encourages parents to remind their younger children not to speak to strangers.
