Harper: Russian militarization in Arctic a potential concern

Yellowknife, NWT – The Prime Minister says Russia’s growing military presence in the Arctic is a concern and Canada should not get complacent about it.

During his ninth annual tour to Canada’s three territories, Stephen Harper said Russia has not made the same sort of aggressive military incursions in the Arctic as it has in Eastern Europe.

But the prime minister gave a “cautious yes” when asked if he was concerned about the militarization of the Arctic.

Russia is busy rebuilding former Soviet-era military bases in its north, and has a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and icebreakers patrolling its waters.

The Prime Minister says Russian planes have also tested the boundaries of Canadian airspace.

Harper says he cautiously answered yes because he has not seen the same kind of Russian aggression in the Arctic that he has in Eastern Europe.

GNWT issues closure cautions for Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads

The GNWT’s department of Infrastructure has issued a 72 Hour Notice of Closure Caution for the Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads. According to the public message posted Sunday afternoon, the roads “may close sooner with little to no notice.” Earlier this month, the Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads were restricted to night travel only between 10 pm to 10 am.
