Salvation Army needs kettle volunteers, offers hampers

The Salvation Army in Yellowknife has opened applications for Christmas hampers, while asking residents for help with its festive kettle campaign.

ApplicationsĀ for hampers are now accepted from 9am till noon each weekday at the charity’sĀ Yellowknife resource centre, located at 4925 45th Street.

“Our hampers contain a Christmas meal in a box along with, if you have kids, toys and some goodies,” said Lieutenant Dusty Sauder of the Salvation Army.

“We do a call-out to the community to be able to put these together and donate toys for kids. The key is that if someone’s in need, we want to be able to give it away and make their Christmas great – make Christmas morning, especially for kids, a day to look forward to. Lots of smiles.

“Folks can stop on by, there’s a little paperwork to get you registered but then we can get you a Christmas hamper.”

The deadline for applications is Friday, December 11. You can call (867) 920-4673 for more information.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to ring the bells as part of its annual Christmas kettle campaign – which provides funds for the hampers.

Volunteers are needed at Walmart, Canadian Tire and the downtown liquor store. Hours are 4pm till 8pm on Thursdays and Fridays, then Saturdays from 10am till 8pm, from November 19 till December 24.

If you can help, contact James Moulton or call the number above.
