Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknife Centre MLA Robert Hawkins says Yukon’s Member of Parliament missed the mark when he attempted to make light of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s house being broken into over the weekend.
The Ottawa home was broken into Saturday night when Trudeau was away in Winnipeg.
Reports say a threatening note was left near the back door of the residence while his wife and children were sleeping.
Yukon MP Ryan Leef took to Twitter after the incident, mocking the Liberal leader for not locking his doors.
Hawkins says many elected officials, including himself, struggle leaving their families behind for work purposes.
“As an MLA we sometimes have the privilege but also the pain of travel. I recognize that my colleagues travel quite a bit as well and they’re away from their families so it’s not necessarily one of the most fun things to do when you’re an elected member because you miss out on a lot of family time.”
Hawkins says no matter your political affiliation there is no place for such comments.
