G.N.W.T provides funding to 14 anti-poverty organizations

Yellowknife, NWT – The G.N.W.T has selected fourteen organizations that will receive anti-poverty funding in the territory.

The government’s Anti-Poverty Action Plan received $500,000 to provide organizations with funding for projects and initiatives to help reduce poverty at community, regional and territorial levels.

Successful applicants will receive funding amounts ranging from $7,000 to $80,000 based on the size, targets and objectives of different projects.

Health and Social Services Minister Glen Abernethy says a collective effort is needed to minimize the effects of poverty in the territory.

“There is no one organization that can eliminate poverty in the Northwest Territories. It’s not solely a G.N.W.T responsibility. Truly battling poverty is going to take partnership and hard work from community governments, Aboriginal governments and non-governmental organizations. We need passionate people who want to make a difference.”

Abernethy says healthy and educated people free from poverty is a top priority for the 17th Legislative Assembly.

By empowering organizations to carry out projects that will have a direct impact on poverty, he believes the G.N.W.T is working towards achieving that goal.
