Forest fire destroys Moraine Point Lodge along Great Slave Lake

Yellowknife, NWT – The G.N.W.T’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources says troublesome fires along Highway 3 have resulted in property loss.

Officials say a spot fire which jumped Moraine Bay during strong winds Saturday is responsible for the loss of the Moraine Point Lodge on the west side of Great Slave Lake.

Fire personnel were unable to access the lodge site until smoke lifted on Tuesday.

While the lodge and outbuildings were lost, the fire did not reach a commercial fish processing plant on Moraine Bay.

Department officials say no new fires have been reported in the North Slave region over the last 24 hours.

Fire danger is moderate to low in the region though smoke may continue to be an issue in some communities.
