G.N.W.T trains additional firefighters in territory’s worst fire season in decades

Yellowknife, NWT – The G.N.W.T’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources says it received a big response to calls for volunteers to be trained as type 3 wildland fire crews.

Communications Manager Judy Mclinton with E.NR. says fourteen people completed training last week and have already been deployed to fires in the territory.

She says additional training courses will start in Yellowknife and Fort Smith Wednesday.

“We do extra firefighter training every year at the beginning of the season in all of our regions but because of the conditions this year and the length of our season, we’ve had to do additional training to bring people on to help us with mop ups of various fires.”

Mclinton says everyone who completes the training and is deployed must pass a physical beforehand.
