Dene Nation “disappointed” by funding cuts to CKLB

Yellowknife, NWT – The Dene Nation has reacted to federal funding cut’s to CKLB radio in Yellowknife, saying they are displeased with the closing and laying off of 11 employees because of a lack of resources.

In a news release, Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus says he’s always been a supporter of the station getting more financial security, but that funding cuts will certainly mean change.

The Voice of Denendeh, the only Aboriginal radio station that broadcasts in the five Dene languages of the N.W.T, will stay operational but only with a staff of two.

In June, Dene leaders voted unanimously in Fort Smith and passed a motion to immediately and aggressively seek more accommodating and permanent fiscal arrangements for broadcasting Aboriginal radio programming.
