YK fighter contemplates going pro after winning flyweight title

A mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter from Yellowknife is considering going pro after winning the Five Star Fight League flyweight title in Dawson, BC last week.

Jarrett Vornbrock, 22, won via unanimous decision over Alberta’s Jesse Atwell in Friday’s title fight.

The match went the distance – five three-minute rounds – but in the end two judges scored it 48-46 and a third judge scored it 49-45 in favour of the Yellowknife fighter.

With the win, Vornbrock is now the top flyweight fighter (125 pounds or less) in Western Canada and second-best across the entire country.

“This guy was ranked pretty high,” said Vornbrock of Atwell. “He was the Canadian national champ so he went down to nationals and also fought in Vegas and did pretty good there as well.

“It was mainly a stand-up fight. The only time it went to the ground was when I was able to knock him down with a shot but he was tough enough to get back up.

“I’m feeling pretty good right now.”

Vornbrock told Moose FM he’s been fighting since he was 17 when he was exposed to kickboxing. He then added some Muay Thai and wrestling to his arsenal when he attended college in Lethbridge.

But the 22-year-old only started taking MMA seriously in the past year under Yellowknife’s Warrior Strong Fight League. And now, Vornbrock wants to see just how far he can go in the sport.

“I think we’re going to try to do the Canadian Kickboxing Nationals and then next summer there will be MMA Nationals so we’re thinking of trying out for that as well.”
