How are Yellowknifers set to vote in the federal election?

There are no official polls in the Northwest Territories – but Moose FM has spent the past month collecting data on federal voting intentions.

Yellowknife and Hay River listeners have been using My Yellowknife Rewards to tell us who will get their vote on October 19, with the Conservatives, Greens, Liberals and New Democrats all fielding candidates in the NWT.

A sample of 100 to 150 residents has been used each week to offer a picture of how Yellowknife and Hay River residents intend to vote.

The most recent results, for the week beginning October 5, show the Liberals and New Democrats tied at 25 percent each, while a third of voters remain undecided. The Conservatives gather 10 percent of the vote; five percent would vote Green.

Since the start of September, at no time have more than four percentage points split the Liberals and NDP in our survey. The New Democrats held the lead in late September, on 26 percent to the Liberals’ 22 percent, but this appears to have shifted during a week in which federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau visited Yellowknife.

There is no margin for error in these figures and this is not a recognized polling method. It’s also important to point out that it doesn’t capture any indication of wider voting intention in the Northwest Territories beyond Yellowknife and Hay River.
