Oreo, dog stolen in Behchoko, found safe on highway

A dog stolen from Behchoko in September has been found alive.

On September 23, a two-year-old shih tzu named Oreo was reported missing. The dog’s owner said a woman claiming to be an NWT SPCA volunteer had taken the dog; the SPCA said the woman was an impostor not known to them.

Now, the SPCA says Oreo is receiving treatment at Great Slave Animal Hospital after being found by the side of the highway earlier this week.

“It looks like whomever took him dumped him on the highway a while ago. He is very thin and dirty but safe,” said the SPCA in an online statement.

“His family are overjoyed to have their boy back with them. He will be going to the vet today for a checkup.”

Norma Gauthier, the dog’s owner, said she was ‘overjoyed’ to have her dog back.

“I never cried so much in my life,” said Gauthier. “Feeling very thankful and blessed by everyone’s help and generosity. My baby is saved, I couldn’t be any happier.”

The identity of the woman who stole Oreo remains unknown. At the time, Gauthier said the woman had called herself ‘Cheryl’, owned a brown truck, and spoke with a Newfoundland accent.
