Operation Impact: expect more road patrols over long weekend

Police in the territory will be conducting more road patrols this long weekend as part of a national initiative.

RCMP and municipal partners will be taking part in Operation Impact throughout the entire Thanksgiving weekend.

It’s designed to make Canadian roads safer and to bring awareness to dangerous driving habits like distracted driving and impaired driving.

“This initiative has been strategically chosen to take place over the long weekend,” said Yellowknife RCMP in a statement.

“During holidays, there is an increase in highway travel and there is often an increase in collisions, and occurrences of impaired driving.

“These collisions have taken away the lives of moms, dads, sisters, brothers, loved ones, co-workers, neighbours, and friends.”

1,800 vehicles were inspected as part of the operation in the territory last year.

Police say that resulted in 23 charges being laid for impaired driving and 63 charges for offences under the Motor Vehicle Act.
