Police in the Northwest Territories say a man from Tuktoyaktuk is set to face charges of extortion and luring a child.
The unidentified 35-year-old was arrested on Tuesday in Tuk. His arrest is part of an internet-based investigation launched in March, involving the RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit.
A police statement on Thursday did not elaborate on what the suspect is alleged to have done, except to add: “At least five other victims have been identified, all approached by an unknown profile through social media.”
The suspect has been released on a promise to appear in court at a later date. The investigation continues.
“Advances in technology allow police to find and prosecute perpetrators of these types of crimes,” said RCMP in a statement.
“The Northwest Territories RCMP is committed to bringing to justice those who use technology to inflict harm on others.”
