Salvation Army in Yellowknife offers free services to stranded truckers

Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknife’s Salvation Army says it will be providing laundry, washroom and shower services to commercial truckers stranded in the city as Highway 3 remains closed.

Intermittent closings and openings of the main artery connecting Yellowknife to the rest of Canada have left motorists stranded both on the road and in town.

We asked Executive Chef Paul Matwiy with the Salvation Army if he thought the city missed out on an opportunity to help commercial truckers stranded in the city.

“I’m sure officials have their hands full manning fires that are burning. I think their attention has probably shifted towards saving some of the smaller communities throughout the Northwest Territories as well as smaller communities surrounding Yellowknife. I don’t think it was something they didn’t want to do, I think it was just overlooked.”

Matwiy says truckers are the backbone of Yellowknife, and that we wouldn’t enjoy many of the commodities we take for granted without them.
