Yellowknife MLA pushes G.N.W.T to provide regular forest fire updates

Yellowknife, NWT – The MLA for Yellowknife Centre says the G.N.W.T is working in collaboration with several partners to monitor forest fire activity in the territory, and that potential threats to public safety, communities and infrastructure are being taken very seriously.

Robert Hawkins says he put pressure on the territorial government to ensure that N.W.T residents are provided with the very latest on forest fire activities.

“I approached Minister Michael Miltenberger last week and suggested that he create a coordinating role and provide daily updates for everyone. I suggested that the government come out every day and give a consistent and qualitative message for residents of the Northwest Territories. We’re in one of those situations where a lack of information causes a lot of stress.”

Hawkins says he’s been impressed with individual departments updating their most recent activities and providing accurate information on forest fires, road closures and other issues related to wildfires burning throughout the territory.
