City of Yellowknife stresses fire safety ahead of weekend

Yellowknife, NWT – As Yellowknifers get ready for the weekend, the city’s Fire Chief is asking everyone to use extreme caution while enjoying outdoor trails, camping or cutting wood.

Darcy Hernblad says any source of spark in the woods has the potential to start a forest fire, including the use of motorized vehicles such as ATV’s or motorbikes, chainsaws and most definitely cigarette butts.

He says the forest fire rating for Yellowknife and North Slave region is currently extreme.

The funding for approved applications will be available until March 31, 2027, but some critics pointed out it leaves families with just weeks to apply before their current funding expires.
