City of Yellowknife stresses fire safety ahead of weekend

Yellowknife, NWT – As Yellowknifers get ready for the weekend, the city’s Fire Chief is asking everyone to use extreme caution while enjoying outdoor trails, camping or cutting wood.

Darcy Hernblad says any source of spark in the woods has the potential to start a forest fire, including the use of motorized vehicles such as ATV’s or motorbikes, chainsaws and most definitely cigarette butts.

He says the forest fire rating for Yellowknife and North Slave region is currently extreme.

The board said the new tools will help make way for more “timely, coordinated and evidence-based” decisions on major projects in the Slave Geological Province within the NWT.
