City of Yellowknife stresses fire safety ahead of weekend

Yellowknife, NWT – As Yellowknifers get ready for the weekend, the city’s Fire Chief is asking everyone to use extreme caution while enjoying outdoor trails, camping or cutting wood.

Darcy Hernblad says any source of spark in the woods has the potential to start a forest fire, including the use of motorized vehicles such as ATV’s or motorbikes, chainsaws and most definitely cigarette butts.

He says the forest fire rating for Yellowknife and North Slave region is currently extreme.

Yellowknife city council voted in favour of a half a day civic holiday for Friday March 20 in recognition of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation annual spring carnival. The city’s declaration recognizes the Dene festival that sees hundreds of people from across the region gather each year in Dettah to take part in traditional and Northern activities and celebrations.
