N.W.T celebrates National Parks Day

Yellowknife, NWT – National Parks Day is being celebrated across Canada tomorrow and the G.N.W.T says it recognizes the annual celebration as a significant day.

The territory is after all home to 33 territorial and five national parks.

In a news release, Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister David Ramsay says N.W.T parks are among the finest in the country.

He says some territorial parks garnered national media attention this year with Nahanni National Park being recognized as a must-see place in 2014, and Fred Henne and Blackstone Territorial Parks making the list for Best Family Campgrounds in the country.

Meet Chinook, one of the Musical Ride’s latest editions, named by a NWT youth

Chinook, a 2 month old foal with the RCMP’s famed Musical Ride was just named by a Yellowknife youth. Her name is among nine for foals born this year, chosen from more than 5,000 entries in an annual contest where youth help find names for the adorable new born foals. “[Chinook] is Canadian. It means warm wind,” said Jerrett in the youth’s written description of the name submission.

Late Wednesday night NWT Fire reported there has been a serious incident involving a bird dog aircraft working with an airtanker group to action a wildfire near Fort Simpson. Mike Westwick with NWT Fire said crews with the territory’s department of Environment and Climate change are responding to the incident with the RCMP.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is alerting residents to a planned telecommunications service disruption tonight from 12:00 am till 4:00 am.

Mackenzie Valley Hwy could see accelerated build process under Bill C-5’s Build Canada Act

The Mackenzie Valley Highway project could potentially see an accelerated and streamlined build under the Bill C-5’s Build Canada Act. The Gray’s Bay Road and Port and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Deep Geological Repository, just referred to the Nation Buiding Projects office, were also named for potential acceleration in a special announcement today in Yellowknife.
