City responding to cybersecurity incident, ask public to delay payments

Officials from the city of Yellowknife just announced they are actively responding to a cybersecurity incident temporarily impacting access to some internal systems and online services.

City leaders reported that they are working closely with cybersecurity experts to understand the nature and full scope of the incident. 

Protecting sensitive data and private information is the main goal at this time, said city staff.

“The City’s main priority is maintaining the integrity of its systems and protecting sensitive and private information.  The City enacted its incident response protocols to contain the incident, including the implementation of additional measures to further enhance its network security. These additional measures are impacting some city services.”

Officials assure that public safety and critical infrastructure systems remain fully operational. City leaders report that due to early detection and response, preliminary findings indicate that no data has been taken

City leaders said that facilities and programming will continue to operate as normal, but at this time facilities can only accept cash payments until further notice.

In their announcement this afternoon, city administration encouraged members of the public to delay making payments of invoices until the current situation is resolved.

Public access computers located at the library is temporarily unavailable as a result of the incident and loans of library materials are temporarily limited to five items.
