Yellowknife Climbing Club launches youth program

Yellowknife Climbing Club is opening up a youth program for budding climbers aged 10 to 15.

The not-for-profit says its 10-week course will teach young students the basic skills and strengths, alongside climbing etiquette and risk management.

The club hopes to attract up to 10 people to the new course, which runs on Mondays from 4:30pm till 6pm,  beginning October 5. The course costs $150, with a youth bouldering competition held at the end on December 7.

“Climbing challenges the brain,” said Eric Binion, who will coach the course alongside Susan Saunders. “You have to make quick decisions and utilize problem-solving skills while coordinating this with your body’s movements.

“Each route is like a puzzle that requires patience, planning, and analysis to complete.”

The club says all experience levels are welcome. Registration closes on October 2.
