Travellers advised of changing conditions near Hwy 1 and Hwy 3 due to wildfires

Wildland teams and GNWT’s department of Infrastructure advised to be cautious in the areas of Hwy 1 at Hwy 3.

Travellers are being advised of a wildfire near the area of Hwy 1, 742 metres northeast of km 452. Officials have been warning since last week that the fire will likely reach the highway.

NWT Fire and the department of Infrastructure advised that conditions on Hwy 3 will be variable and this morning the department of Infrastructure issued a closure caution for the highway between from Km 0 to Km 30

Last week, GNWT’s Department of Infrastructure decided to enforce a scheduled closure of Hwy 3 overnight beginning from Friday to Monday. The closure affected Hwy 3 between Fort Providence and Highway 9 Junction starting at 12 am, each night until Sept. 8.

Representatives from the department of Infrastructure were concerned for the safety of travellers after multiple reports of unsafe driving conditions due to poor visibility.
Fire ZF015, located west of Hwy 3, has persisted despite the ongoing response of Wildland crews since June. Intense fire activity from ZF015 is visible along the highway with crews working to protect cabins and other values on the landscape.
GNWT’s department of Infrastructure has not reported additional scheduled closures for Hwy 3 during daytime hours as yet, but officials are advising travellers to drive cautiously and to keep an eye on updates at DiveNWT.ca
