Sections of Hwy 3 closed overnight beginning today until Monday due to poor visibility

GNWT’s Department of Infrastructure has decided to enforce a scheduled closure of Hwy 3 overnight beginning today until Monday. The closure will affect Hwy 3 between Fort Providence and Highway 9 Junction starting at 12 am, every night until Sept. 8.

The department posted the update on social media yesterday.

“From September 5 – 8, Highway 3 will be closed each night between Fort Providence and Highway 9 Junction starting at 12 am. The road will reopen each morning around 8 am if conditions allow.”

Representatives from the department of Infrastructure were concerned for the safety of travellers after multiple reports of unsafe driving conditions due to poor visibility.

“The decision to close this section was made with respect to public safety, as fog patches are expected to develop overnight and persist into the early morning hours over the next few days.”

Fire ZF015, located west of Hwy 3, has persisted despite the ongoing response of Wildland crews since June. Intense fire activity from ZF015 is visible along the highway with crews working to protect cabins and other values on the landscape.

The highway is closed of this morning. GNWT’s department of Infrastructure reported there are no scheduled closures for Hwy 3 during daytime hours, but officials are advising travellers to drive cautiously and to keep an eye on updates at DiveNWT.ca
