Ft Providence health centre closes, folks urged to prioritize safety, wellness

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority issued a public advisory that effective immediately, the Community Health and Social Services Centre located in Fort Providence is closed until further notice. Health officials are advising the public to prioritize their health and safety, including mental health, during this difficult time.

Yesterday morning, residents of Fort Providence were ordered to evacuate due to a wildfire that was last estimated to be about 2 km from the community.

A mobile paramedic service remains stationed in the community to address basic health needs and for first responders.

“This team will remain on site as long as conditions permit but may be withdrawn at any moment if safety becomes a concern. Emergency services personnel in the community will be able to reach the paramedic by radio in the event of any communication outages,” said officials in an announcement issued this morning.

The authority said that general health advice is available by calling 811.

Officials advised that anyone who would like the latest information about public safety, including access to notices, alerts and orders, to visit the GNWT’s public safety page at https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/public-safety.

In Hay River, in-person healthcare services are currently available to evacuees.

“For residents who have evacuated to Hay River and are in need of primary care services, please call or present to the local health clinic. In an emergency, call 911. If you require child and family services support, there is staff on site in Hay River at the evacuation centre.”

At this difficult time, health officials are encouraging the evacuees and the general public to prioritize health and wellness, including mental health.

“It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, your feelings are valid. If you have concerns about stress, mood, sleep, or if you or a family member are struggling, support is available.”

Mental health resources are also available in person as well as virtually.

Anyone who would like more information about mental health supports available is encouraged to visit www.nthssa.ca/mentalhealth for eMental Health resources, crisis line information, and details on services available.
