Boat capsizes in Tulita, man dies after two-day search

A man has died after his boat capsized on the Mackenzie River in Tulita on Saturday.

His body was not found until Monday, after a search and rescue operation described as ‘difficult’ by police.

The man, who was not wearing a life jacket, has not been formally named – but has been identified locally as Eddy John Erutse.

He was trying to bring his boat around to a floating dock on Saturday evening when it capsized in high winds. Those on the shore quickly lost sight of both the man and the boat, and a search – which continued throughout Sunday – proved fruitless.

Finally, on Monday morning, a body was found. RCMP say they “believe it to be the body of the missing boater”.

In a statement, Tulita RCMP added their thanks to the community for helping the search.

“Many people offered their assistance in very difficult circumstances. It has been greatly appreciated,” read the statement. “Our condolences are with family, friends, and community members touched by this tragedy.”
