Polled Yellowknifers split on proposed Grace Lake South development

Yellowknife, NWT – It remains to be seen how the city of Yellowknife will proceed with the development of as many as 85 additional lots along Grace Lake.

On Monday afternoon, councillors discussed whether or not the city should proceed with a phased residential development along the south shore of the lake.

Lands there are being considered because of a desire for additional single family development opportunities and because of the attractiveness of the lake’s waterfront.

Rohan Brown has lived in Yellowknife for five years and says he canoes and fishes frequently on Grace Lake.

He says he’d like to see the development plan reconfigured.

“I suggest development be moved further away from the shore of the lake. This will provide an ideal outcome in that the city can still obtain substantial revenue from the sale of these lots, the owners will still have large lots on which to build properties and they’ll still be within half a kilometer of Grace Lake. This way the natural setting could also be preserved to the greatest extent possible.”

Councillors agreed to discuss the matter further Aug. 11.
