Local accountant to face Heyck in Yellowknife mayoral race

It seems Mark Heyck won’t go uncontested in the race to become the next Mayor of Yellowknife.

Earlier today, local chartered accountant John Himmelman filed his official papers, declaring his intention to run against Heyck.

Himmelman, a former GNWT employee, writes a regular column on taxes for the Yellowknifer and also contributes to EDGE YK.

Heyck, who’s sat in the mayor’s chair since 2012, announced he’d be standing for re-election back in June. Only Heyck and Himmelman have declared for the mayoral race so far.

The municipal election will take place on October 19.

Contaminated soil detected at a Yellowknife school

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 is performing further tests on soil at Mildred Hall School and working on a clean up and remediation plan. A set of testing earlier this month confirmed coliform and e-coli soil contamination on the school grounds, following stagnant water buildup in the basement. In the meantime the public is being advised to keep away and keep their pets away from the fenced off area on Mildred Hall grounds.
