Despite challenges due to an out of control wildfire near St. John’s and smokey conditions, beach volleyball athletes from the N.W.T. at the Canada Games pushed forward to compete. At courtside, Team NT’s basketball team nabbed a victory after facing off with a Northern neighbour.
A number of competitions may be moved indoors but the beach volleyball matches, which were postponed earlier this week, took place outdoors today.
Beach volleyball was postponed due to Paddy’s Pond fire, which is burning near the city of St. John’s. With ongoing concerns, organizers took precautions in case a potential evacuation was necessary, which led to restrictions in attendance at the volleyball games.
Today, the NT women’s basketball team played against the Yukon team, it was a close game but NT took the victory 62-40.
Alison Brown, who is the GNWT’s Director of Sport, Recreation and Youth told True North FM that the women’s basketball teams of the North have bonded and have exhibited tremendous camaraderie and sportsmanship, cheering each other on during competitions.
Way to go Team NT! Way to go athletes across the North and beyond! Congratulations to all the athletes from everywhere who are showcasing the strength and diversity at work in the Canada Games.
True North FM has reached out to Brown and we will include more details this upcoming week on how organizers are going “above and beyond” to celebrate inclusion at the Summer Games.
