CRTC grants Cabin Radio lone new Yellowknife FM licence

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved Cabin Radio’s application for a broadcasting licence to operate an English-language commercial FM radio station in Yellowknife.

The decision, released Wednesday, means Cabin Radio will eventually air programming on 93.9 FM.

“Approving Cabin Radio’s proposal will add a new voice to the Yellowknife FM radio market and will contribute to greater programming diversity and ensure access to essential news and information,” the commission stated.

Vista Radio Ltd., owner and operator of True North FM (CJCD-FM) had applied for a second commercial FM licence but was turned down. The commission cited concerns about the economic impact on the local radio market, noting Yellowknife could only support one additional station at this time.

“We respect the commission’s decision and congratulate Cabin Radio,” said Bryan Edwards, president of Vista Radio Ltd.

Cabin Radio said they plan to maintain community-driven programming, including local news coverage, cultural programming, and support for Indigenous and northern musicians.

Vista Radio operates 71 radio stations across Canada, including True North FM in Yellowknife, which has been on-air since 1979.
