Fire near Hwy 3 shows increased activity, four new starts in NWT

Officials reported that four new starts were spotted in the N.W.T. since yesterday, including two in the North Slave region and two new starts in the South Slave region. One community in the Dehcho remains on an evacuation notice and a wildfire near Hwy 3 in the North Slave region continues to show increased activity and smoke.

NWT Fire has issued a fire weather advisory, saying “Hot and dry conditions are expected throughout the week.

Officials caution travellers to check highway conditions before they travel.

“Low visibility is expected on highways,” said NWT Fire, who encourage drivers to go to drivenwt.ca for updates.

𝗗𝗘𝗛𝗖𝗛𝗢 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗢𝗡

In the Dehcho region, the community of Tthets’éhk’edélî (Jean Marie First Nation) remains under an evacuation notice while a group of wildfires near Fort Liard persist despite ongoing active mobilization from firefighters.

Jean Marie River First Nation and NWT Fire downgraded an alert to an evacuation notice about two weeks ago, due to a fire located about 24 km northwest of Jean-Marie River and about 23 km southeast of Fort Simpson (FS014-25).

Jean Marie River First Nation officials urged the community to keep informed and prepared in case conditions change.

Crews continue to respond to a string of wildfires (FS009, FS014, FS018) near Fort Liard. Officials continued to work to prevent its spread toward the community of Fort Liard.

“Fire crews are continuing to action these fires. Fires 25, 26, 27 and 28 were declared out due to the strong efforts by crews and aircraft. Firefighters and aircraft will continue their work to limit any growth and extinguish hotspots on the remaining fires. There is no immediate threat to the communities or other infrastructure,” said NWT Fire yesterday.

Last week, the FS019 fire, which is part of this complex, was declared extinguished. Fire FS018 has been added to the complex to optimize resources and interventions.

A wildfire located about 18 km northeast of Wrigley and 1 km north of Hodgson Creek (FS007) remains about 1010 hectares in size.

Officials said the fire does not pose a threat to the community and crews will continue monitoring the fire.

NORTH SLAVE REGION

A wildfire near Hwy 3 is continues to show increased fire activity and smoke. There were two new fires reported in the North Slave region, including one located northwest of Prelude Lake, less than 1 km from the shore (ZF036-25).

“A resident from Prelude Lake quickly reported this lightning-caused fire, enabling crews to respond swiftly. The fire, covering less than 1 hectare, is now under control. There is no threat to homes, cabins, or other values in the area,” said NWT Fire today.

Another fire was spotted 19 km northeast of Lake Grandin (ZF037-25).

“This naturally caused fire is currently 40 hectares in size and out of control. Fire crews will monitor the fire as it naturally progresses. There is no risk to communities, infrastructure, or cabins,” said NWT Fire today.

Another wildfire located about 3 km west of Hwy 3 (ZF015-25) remains 23,116 hectares in size and has seen increased fire activity since last week.

Today and yesterday, fire crews patrolled the fire perimeter, extinguishing hot spots when it was safe to do so. Officials reported that they continue to see an increase in fire behaviour.

Crews also reported that visibility remains limited. Officials urge the public to exercise caution when travelling along Hwy 3.

SOUTH SLAVE REGION

There were two new fires spotted in the South Slave region today including one located about 6.5 km northwest of Hwy 6 and 10 km northeast of Pine Point (SS018-25).

“This lightning-caused fire is 1.5 hectares in size and has been quickly actioned by airtankers, helicopters and crews to limit its growth. There is no risk to communities, cabins or infrastructure in the area,” said NWT Fire today.

Another fire was reported today, located about 3 km north of Rutledge Lake (SS019-25),

“This lightning-caused fire is currently 15 hectares and out of control. Crews will monitor this fire as it naturally progresses. Crews will be conducting ignition around Rutledge Lake Lodge to protect that value,” said NWT Fire today.

A fire that was first reported about one week ago (SS013-25), located about 6 km south of Hwy 6 and about 7.5 km north-northeast of Hwy 5 remains about 1,598 hectares in size and was recategorized as Under Control. Officials said that the fire does not pose any to cabins or infrastructure.

BEAUFORT DELTA REGION

NWT Fire cautioned of increased smoke in the region.

“Communities may see an increase in smoke due to the recent heat in the region, but these fires do not pose a risk,” said officials.

SAHTU

While yesterday three new fires were spotted in the Sahtu region, today saw no significant fire activity.

“No fires of note at this time,” said NWT Fire today.

Officials urged residents across N.W.T. to be mindful of campfires and bans in place and to practice caution when using fire.

“Stay alert, monitor your campfires carefully, never leave them unattended, and follow the SOAK-STIR-SOAK method to ensure they are fully out. To report a wildfire, call:

In the Dehcho region, Fort Simpson is among the communities with a full fire ban is in place. In the South Slave region, Hay River is among the communities with a partial fire ban in place.
