Report: G.N.W.T spending as much as $1-million a day to fight forest fires

Yellowknife, NWT – Battling one of the worst forest fire seasons the Northwest Territories has seen in decades has been costly for the G.N.W.T.

Reports say, at times, as much as $1-million was being spent a day fighting blazes throughout the territory.

The costs accumulated as firefighters tackled multiple fires around the community of Kakisa, the Reid Lake territorial park and campground and along highways that connect Yellowknife to the rest of the country.

Reports say this year’s firefighting budget has already been spent, meaning more money will have to be borrowed.

The government reportedly has a $100-million cushion for this type of emergency.
