Yellowknife by-law officers begin bike patrols throughout city

Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknifers may notice more of a police presence along city trails and downtown streets this summer.

Two Municipal Enforcement Division officers have completed a bike training course led by the R.C.M.P, and another two are scheduled to attend the next available course.

Manager Doug Gillard with Municipal Enforcement talks about some of the advantages of bike and foot patrols.

“We’re hoping that with more officers on the trail, there’s more of a sense of safety. In addition to bike patrols there will also be foot patrols which allow for greater interaction with the public. It’s much easier to approach an officer on bike or on foot.”

Gillard says the course included instruction on low speed precision riding, crowd control techniques, self-defence tactics, road safety and trail riding.

Each participant was required to complete 150 kilometers of practical riding and pass a final exam.

Regular patrols will continue throughout the summer.
