Among a number of other like-minded projects, the Government of Canada is providing funding for a special NWT employment training program.
As part of the Sustainable Jobs Training Fund, the Government of Canada is sending $75 million to different projects across the country, all of which are focused on giving workers the skills they need to apply for low-carbon economy jobs.
Each of these projects are focused one on of three major fields, those being, carbon management, energy efficient infrastructure, and electric vehicle maintenance.
For the Northwest Territories, $8 million will be going towards the Mine Training Society’s “Sustainable North: Our Workforce” project, otherwise known as SNOW. This project is designed to offer skills training for mid-career workers in the NWT, and in more remote Indigenous communities. Participants will be able to take advantage of special education opportunities for low-carbon projects. This project will also be guided by an Advisory Board of different employers, business leaders, and government stakeholders to make sure it is meeting the needs of the industry.
